Description

Sh2 -177 is a visible emission nebula in the Cassiopeia constellation . The cloud can be identified a few arc minutes southwest of κ Cassiopeiae . It is a faint but extensive H II region , about 4.9 light years in diameter , extending over a very rich star field and forming part of the Arm of Perseus , about 2500 parsecs (about 8150 light years) away, at of the association OB Cassiopeia OB5; some open clusters and also other smaller but brighter nebulae, such as Sh2-172 and Sh2-173 , are linked to this association . The combined action of the stellar wind of the large mass stars of the association created a large super bubble in the regionwith a diameter of 380 parsecs. The main responsible for the ionization of gases is a blue star of spectral class 09V, cataloged as BD + 61 105.
